How it works

Panels almost never make their rated watts. Angle, heat, wiring, and less-than-perfect sun knock roughly a quarter off, so the calculator works from about 72% of nameplate output rather than the number on the box.

It then divides the energy you need by what your panels realistically harvest in a day of peak sun hours — the equivalent hours of full-strength sunlight your area gets — to estimate days to full and the panel wattage for a one-day refill.

How long does it take to charge a power station with 200W of solar?

A 1,000Wh station on 200W of panels takes roughly 7–9 hours of good sun, which in most places is spread across a day and a half. Cloud, shade, and low winter sun stretch it further. Enter your own numbers above for a closer estimate.

What are "peak sun hours"?

It's the number of hours a day the sun delivers full-strength energy, bundling weaker morning and evening light into an equivalent count. Much of the US averages 4–5 in summer and far fewer in winter. It's a more honest basis for planning solar than "hours of daylight."

Why won't adding more panels charge my station faster?

Every station has a maximum solar input. Panels beyond that ceiling are capped to what the charge controller accepts, so the extra watts are wasted. Check your station's max input rating before buying more panels — the calculator's target is a useful goal, not a reason to over-panel.

Can I use the station while it charges from solar?

Usually yes. Most stations pass solar through while powering devices. Just remember that whatever you run comes off the incoming charge, so the net refill is slower. For a true top-up, let it charge with a light load or none at all.
